Well after following Rod912's advice on wed evening i've been a little research onve VZi aswell as some non-VW forums and it apears that in principle the idea of this acid dipping is good, but it appears to be hit r miss whether its good in the long run.

i will have to do some more research, but at the moment its gone from risking not having it done and having rust come through in 5-6 years, to having it dipped and have a risk of the acid not washed off properly

RISKY!!!

thats the problem - it can hold acid in the little holes all over the car - acid WILL rip out anything that isnt good steel so rust filler and anything else previous owners have rammed in tehre will be gone

its nicer than blasting as blasting can warp the metal and damage it - the blast can also get stuck inside all those nasty small places the same way as the acid

plus u have to find somewhere that are nice and careful with everything u have - my oval was media blasted before i came into owner ship of it and during that process the body got a bit of a bump

im sure that if the process is done by someone who knows what their doing and really cares about what u care about it should all be good

originally i was under the impression that if you have the money then there werent any drawbacks with acid dipping and e-coating, but that doesnt seem to be the problem. i'm proabbly just as well off as sorting out the van myself and getting the bits i cant get to in the chassis with blaster.

just out of interest, waxoyling appears to be a good way of protecting the chassis, but what if you waxoyl metal that is already rusting??? for example, if i waxoyled inside box section chassis legs. i could get to them by drilling a hole and waxoyling, but going get in there to bare metal and get rid of the rust!!

It's all pretty much been covered, but also remember if you plan on doing any more welding waxoil is VERY flamable!

cheers. i think i have decided to steer away from the dipping because of what has been discussed. that is alot of money i can spend protecting it in other ways.

i've started refitting stuff to the bus now and workign on re-wiring the whole bus
